Equipment Guide

Having the right equipment will help you with your recovery

Things you absolutely must have:

  • Ice packs. You need flexible gel ice packs. Have plenty on hand if you don’t get an ice machine.

  • Walker. You will likely be leaving the hospital with one (it’s often provided to you directly).

  • Toilet riser. Depending on your height, you may want this to raise the toilet seat to make it easier to get on and off.

  • Shower chair. A plastic chair for your shower with nonslip feet and no wheels.

  • Three-in-one shower chair. This portable bedside commode doubles as an elevated seat over the toilet and then triples as a shower chair.

  • Pillows or wedges to properly elevate your leg for straightening and to reduce swelling.

  • Bell. 🛎️ In all seriousness, you will want a way to alert people to help you when you need help in the first few days. Have something you know will get their attention— a bullhorn, cowbell, yelling for help, whatever it takes.

Are there other things you might want that would be nice to have?

  • Ice machine. Using an ice machine helps reduce your pain and swelling.

  • Zero Degree Knee for straightening

  • Knee Buddy for elevating

  • Grabber. A grabber can help you pick up things that are just out of reach.

  • Leg-lifter/Stretch Strap. A leg-lifter strap will help you move your leg and can help with physical therapy exercises.

  • Shower sleeve. A shower sleeve is handy for covering your leg in the shower the first few times to protect your bandage if it isn’t waterproof.

  • Mini skateboard. A mini skateboard can assist with range-of-motion exercises.

  • Stationary bicycle or peddler. A stationary bike was one of the most valuable things I used during my recovery. Peddling can help speed up the healing process.

  • TENS unit. Electric stimulation from a TENS unit is helpful for quad activation, muscle relaxation, and pain management.

  • The Kneely Pad. Use a knee pad like The Kneely Pad to assist you with kneeling once your surgeon allows you to begin kneeling.

  • Car Cane. This is an ergonomic car handle that will allow you to get in and out of the car without fear of falling.

  • Knee Massage Devices- to help with pain and breaking up scar tissue

  • Leg Hammock-handy to mount under a desk or table to help with straightening and stiffness relief

  • Compression Stockings to reduce swelling-they may be given to you during your surgery.
